Maybe it’s the teacher in me, but I think July is the *perfect* time to start planning for fall. Fall just might be my favorite season, so it’s important for me to start early while I intentionally plan for a great season. For me, fall is all about coziness and comfort, and fun hobbies are a great way to enjoy the lower temperatures (or protect yourself from them). Here are 7 cool hobbies that will help you have the best fall!
7 Cool Fall Hobbies
Hiking & Nature Walks
Depending on where you live, the landscape outside is transitioning into something even more beautiful during the fall, and hike and nature walks are great outdoor hobbies for enjoy the new colors and cool breezes. Besides some basic supplies, like suitable shoes, it’s also super budget friendly! Invite a friend to go along with you (especially if it’s a new-to-you route) or go by yourself for some mindful solitude.
Cooking & Baking
There are sooo many fall crops that you can turn into tasty seasonal dishes like stews, warm drinks, and desserts. You could visit a farm to pick your produce of choice (I’d love to go apple picking!) and then go home to whip up a pie and make a whole day of it!
Knitting or Crocheting
I LOVE crocheting (I daresay it’s the best hobby on the list??), and fall always feels like the perfect time to curl up with some yarn and a hook and work on a sweater, or scarf, or a new cozy blanket. If you’re not sure how to crochet or knit, there are tons of videos online, and you could probably find an affordable starter kit, like this one!
Photography
Let’s go back to those beautiful landscapes. Photography is a great way to spend your time and appreciate the season in a new way by capturing the beauty around you. As a former photographer myself, I know this hobby can be pricey, but don’t let that reputation scare you. Most smartphones will still produce quality photos, and they’re great tools for getting started.
Reading
When I’m not curled up with my crochet supplies, reading is my hobby of choice. Reading is such a great way to spend a chilly evening especially with a warm drink. I love reading on my Kindle, but visiting a bookstore on a fall day and picking up a murder mystery or romance is such a vibe. If you tend to feel more isolated when the temperature drops, look for a book club or consider starting one yourself!
Gardening
Fall is usually known as harvest time, but it’s also a great time to start planting for spring or to keep smaller plants like herbs indoors. Start small with some grocery store seeds and work your way up to keep it in the budget.
Yoga & Meditation
Seasonal depression starts to creep up in the fall, so being intentional with mental health practices and fitness is a must. Yoga and meditation are low impact ways to keep your body and mind in check during the colder months. You can join an in-person class for more structured instruction and face time with others, or you can keep it more affordable by doing online videos and following along at home!
